FESSH pays tribute to Professor John Knowles Stanley
(30 March 1944 – 04 February 2021)
FESSH wishes to convey its respects and sympathies to the family, friends and colleagues of Professor Stanley who has sadly passed away.
John Stanley was a hand surgeon of great distinction, pioneering and influencing the develop-ment and implementation of hand surgery in the United Kingdom in the 1980s and 1990s. With colleagues, he founded the internationally regarded Upper Limb unit at Wrightigton Hospital in 1991 and had a particular focus on the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis as well as other complex problems of the wrist. This was a testament to John Stanley's professional and leadership skills as well as his personal qualities of commitment, passion and drive combined with pragmatism and perseverance.
John Stanley's research activities, particularly in the introduction of hand and wrist prostheses, produced more than 100 peer reviewed papers in learned journals as well as countless presentations to learned societies. He wrote two books, supplied chapters for 20 more and de-livered many eponymous lectures. He was awarded a Chair in Hand Surgery by the University of Manchester in 1996.
He travelled widely, not only in the UK and Europe, but worldwide, particularly in America, Australia, France and Switzerland, resulting in a long list of honorary fellowships and member-ships as well as collaborations with centres of excellence in hand surgery.
John is responsible for the training of many hand surgeons across the world who had the good fortune to learn from his deep knowledge, great experience. They testify to his humble ap-proach and good humour.
John Stanley served as President of the British Society for Surgery of the Hand in 1999 and Vice-president of the Royal College of Surgeons England from 2010-2012.
Finally, in 2016 John was made 'Pioneer of Hand Surgery', by the International Federation of Societies for Surgery of the Hand, a lasting tribute as his name now sits amongst the great's of Hand Surgery.
Rotterdam Congress -> FESSH-ON(line)-WEEK 2021
Event will be accredited by EACCME.
Due to the uncertainties caused by the pandemic, the annual FESSH congress will be organised online on the original date of 16-19 June 2021.
We had hoped that our announcement now would have been an invitation to a live congress in Rotterdam but reality is unfortunately different. The program includes many sessions of a normal live program including, for example, the 10 best papers session from the Journal of Hand Surgery European volume, instructional courses and the EWAS session. As the theme of the meeting is complications in hand surgery, we will add an exciting session entitled "Disasters from the Masters". In addition, we will present live surgery sessions on many hand surgery topics in a superb Cadlab and will debate difficult problems. A newly created concept will challenge different FESSH countries to produce presentations in a so-called "Nations Competition". We are looking forward to welcoming you all to the FESSH Online Week in June. It will be a fantastic program that will only get better with your input as participants.

FESSH Online Workshops (FESSH Academy project)
22-24 April 2021 – The event will be accredited by EACCME
As the main face-to-face FESSH Academy event has now been moved to October, we are inviting you to join us for three online FESSH workshops, to run over three consecutive days on Thursday and Friday evenings and on Saturday morning on April 22-24.
The sessions will consist of lively and informative panel discussions of interesting and controversial cases. We anticipate that these sessions will be of particular interest to those who are considering sitting the EBHS examination. There will be an opportunity to ask questions during each session. There is no registration fee for the event but sign-up is required.

2) Congenital Problems of the Hand,
3) Adult Pathology
