Vacancy for the role of ‘Editor’
Journal of Hand Surgery (European Volume)

This position has a three year tenure and is available from 1^st January 2018. The successful applicant will work with four other Editors under the guidance of the Editor-in-Chief, although with considerable autonomy.

Duties:

1. The Editor will be assigned submissions for editorial decision, along with the reviewers’ comments. These papers will be allocated by the Journal Manager and the successful applicant must be prepared to review submissions from a large spectrum of the practice of hand surgery (not only papers on a sub-specialty, such as the wrist).
2. Decide the fate of the assigned submissions (acceptance, acceptance after revision, resubmission and rejection) in a timely manner (with 10 days maximum and ideally within a few days) on the basis of the reviewers’ comments, expert statistical advice when needed, and his/her appraisal of the paper.
3. Edit papers he/she decides to accept for publication in a timely manner (frequently after authors’ first revision of the original submission).
4. Perform editorial work and communicate with authors using the journal’s online Editorial Manager system.
5. Be available for skype conferences with the other editors 3-4 times a year.
6. Attendance at the annual Editorial board meetings (held during FESSH congresses) is desirable but not compulsory.
7. The post is supported throughout by the Editorial team particularly the Journal Manager and the Editor-in-Chief who will willingly provide assistance as required with managing the processes and making decisions.
8. The post is for 3 years, extendable for up to another 3 years by mutual agreement.
9. There will b an appraisal after the first 6 months and yearly thereafter assessing performance based upon response times and quality of decision making

Personal Specification

1. Must have been a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Hand Surgery (European Volume) or an equivalent journal.
2. Be able to commit the equivalent to at least one day per week on a regular basis to editorial duties.
3. Possess an adequate understanding of written English language and grammar to fulfil this editing role. Editors who are not native English speakers will be supported by the Editor-in-Chief.
4. Willingness to adjust acceptance/rejection rate to remain within the desired range of the Editor-in-Chief.

Remuneration

1. The present annual stipend of an editor is £8,000 per annum.
2. Travel allowance to cover reasonable costs of attending Editorial Board meetings.
3. Allowance to cover reasonable costs of attending Committee of Management meetings.
